What does Karukhaya mean?

The name is made up of two parts. Or more precisely: a place and a feeling.

Karu refers to the Karoo. A vast semi-desert landscape in the interior of South Africa. Sparse plains. Open horizons. Very little distraction. A landscape that does not search for quiet. It simply has it.

Those who have been there rarely remember a single building or a particular place. What remains is the feeling of space.

The second part of the name comes from isiXhosa. A language spoken primarily in the eastern parts of South Africa. The Xhosa are one of the country's largest ethnic groups and have shaped the culture of many communities along the coast of the Eastern Cape.

Khaya means home. Not as an address, but as the place you return to. Together, they became Karukhaya.
A name that connects two things that, at first, seem to have little in common. A landscape and a home.
